Aerobicmom: What it’s all About Part 2

aerobics for moms

Okay, this week’s blog posts are actually an assignment from my blogging expert husband, (and actually came from Problogger, Darren Rowse).

And the assignment is this: an elevator pitch.  Basically, an elevator pitch is a concise, but thorough “mission statement” that explains what your blog is all about.  The idea is that if you were in an elevator and somebody asked you about your blog, you could explain it to them in the amount of time you had before either of you reached your floor.  This is something I’ve actually wanted to do for some time, because as I’ve stated before, I believe that the WHY behind we do changes everything.

So, here goes.  In case any of you have been wondering who I am talking to, what I am talking about, and why I am talking in the first place, it all comes back to my tag line.

Real Moms.  Real bodies.  Real perspective.

Today, we’ll talk about:

Real bodies

Any woman, including those who appear air-brushed on magazine covers, knows that her body isn’t perfect.  Nobody’s is.  In the face of unrealistic expectations and surgically-altered role models, it can be a struggle for all of us to accept our physical imperfections.  For me, it was the overwhelming desire to be a mom that finally motivated me to overcome a battle with anorexia.  Even when I was so thin that my hair was falling out, my fingernails stopped growing, and my reproductive system had shut down, there were still areas of my body that were not good enough for me.

Real bodies don’t come in a singular mold, and hating our own bodies because they don’t look like someone else’s is a sure ticket to lifelong misery.  It seems that everywhere we turn the messages are telling us to change our body:  diet after diet after diet, pills, exercise programs, plastic surgery.  With so much marketing in your face, it gets easy to blur the line of healthy intentions with body obsession.

Instead of inciting women to try anything to “change their body,” it is my hope to inspire women to embrace their bodies for what they CAN do, not what they can’t;  for what they ARE, not what they aren’t.  While I do believe passionately that everyone of us will live a happier, fuller life if we are consciously living healthfully, I never want any of us to waste another day living with anxiety over what we’re going to eat or if we’ve gained or lost a pound.  Heaven help us if that’s our measure of success.

Real bodies are bodies that mean something.  Real bodies have scars that remind us of our past.  Have crow’s feet that remind us of our future.  Have soft spots that remind us of what came from inside us.  Have hard spots that remind us of all the work we put into them and all the strength that lies within.

Real bodies are beautiful.

I really love this Becky! I was just telling my hubbie the other day that even though my body today is nothing like the pre-mommy body, I am actually much more in “love” with me now than I ever was then??? Very wierd, but so true!!

I have accepted what is the best I can do with what I’ve been given. I whole heartedly agree, women need to stop … See Moretrying to change what they are or idealizing what they can’t ever be but embrace the best YOU we can be. By doing that it doesn’t mean I just accepted the extra 35+ lbs I gained after each pregnancy, but I made an acceptable, maintainable standard for myself and worked very hard to get there.

Once you get to your best then learn to enjoy it….dress cute, stay fit, eat well and love your body and all the battle wounds that go with it!! Its amazing what a great pair of jeans, a fantastic bra, and a loving husband who supports and loves you for all you’ve done to bring life into the world can do for any “real” woman.

Your article is beautiful, written from the heart, and has the potential to reach many women who have been lead to believe that they need to look or be a certain way to be loved. Let your voice be heard, and let the laughter lines tell a story as our true nature unfolds. Blessingsx

Thanks so much for the comments! It makes my day to know that something I had to say lifted someone else even for a moment. That’s what this is all about!
