Posted on 11. Mar, 2010 by in UVU Online Curriculum

Enjoy the Aussie accent!

Remember the following points regarding Warm-Up & Flexibility:

  • Warm-up prior to stretching so muscles will be warm and pliable
  • Stretching before exercise lengthens muscles and tendons and helps prevent injury
  • Stretching after exercise aids in the repair and recovery of muscles and tendons and helps prevent muscle soreness
  • A static stretch should be held for 15 seconds

This taught me one thing that I had never heard of before: Stretching should be to the point of tenstion, not to the point of pain. I was always taught that you need to stretch as far as you can force yourself to, so you can become more flexible. This video says that that makes stretching null and void. I am the least flexible person I know, and this might be why! I am going to remember that when I am doing my stretching, and not try to force my body to stretch too far.

I am so glad you gained some new insight from this post! Gentle stretching is the best for our bodies. Stretching, breathing, & relaxing at the end of our workouts should be our treat for all the hard work we did, right? I’ll try to leave more time for this reward time at the end of class! :)

I enjoyed this video. I enjoy stretching and relaxing but this had some new techniques that I haven’t hear of before. I enjoy the stretching that you do with us at the end of class. Other classes I have taken don’t spend quite enough time stretching at the end. I have felt less sore because of this after your classes :]

Thanks KyLynn! I always struggle to make the time to stretch at the end when I’m having so much fun with the cardio. I’m glad to hear that I’m doing better this semester!

I was surprised to learn the importance of stretching. The right stretching technique will help us have a more pleasurable and less painful workout and how even the way we breath is crucial when warming up. This video also pointed out something very interesting… how stretching increases our muscle temperture to help us be more flexible when starting our exercise routine. I will try to stretch, not only before starting any type of exercise, but also at the end.

    That was a good video!
I always thought, and I saw that the only moment we should do stretching it was before and after exercises. While ago I started an exercise program that it contains a whole hour for week doing only stretching. They explained the same thing that this video teaches us. I wish that more people know this knowledge. I glad this Zumba class contain this information,

Wow, love the video! I want to go visit Australia now! I absolutely love to stretch!! It just feels SO good! Especially when I stretch a muscle that is sore, it’s one of those “oh it hurts so good” type of pains. I’m glad that the video pointed out that you need to warm up before working out too. When I didn’t know anything about working out, i did that and my body didn’t like it one bit! It seemed like working out just damaged by body and made it sore when really I was just doing it wrong!

I also, like Kjera, was taught to push my stretch to the limit. That’s probably why I hate stretching and hardly ever do it (it’s bad I know)! But honestly I hated that stretching feeling like my muscle and joints were going to snap! It never even occurred to me to slowly ease into the stretch! Yes, common sense doesn’t always grace me with its presence. :D And I never thought that stretching would enhance your performance, but it makes sense! I also liked that they mentioned a warm up, what’s the point in trying to stretch stiff “rubber bands”?

Well stretching has never been my favorite thing to do. I always just wanted to jump into the activity and not stretch. I paid a huge consequence by blowing out my arm and ankle. I really understand the idea of stretching now. Of course like the video says it helps with relaxing and flexibility, but it allows loosen your body up to play sports. After your activity is done the stretch helps cool you down.

I am sorry you had to learn the hard way. I’ve never had a huge injury, but I definitely get super tight hamstrings if I skip my stretch after a run. It will bother me for a week.
