Consistency: The key to healthy living…and blogging

Posted on 11. Nov, 2009 by in Feed Your Body, Love Your Body, Work Your Body

Okay, okay…so any of you have been following my blog may have noticed that I took what may be termed as a month-long hiatus. So, life gets busy, right? I started off slacking because of a big event I had that upcoming weekend. Next thing you know, the next week creeps up and I’m paper macheing a 10 foot tree in my garage every spare minute (no–seriously–and I don’t recommend it). The next week I had to finish my book for book club, and then I was too tired to bother, and so on and so on.

Screen shot 2009-11-11 at 8.46.56 PMEnter my SEO, internet-marketing mentor husband, who gives me a strong reprimand: “you’ll never has a successful business blog if you’re not consistent!”

Is he right? Of course he is (though I always hate to admit it) and no matter how good my excuses are, the fact remains the same: you can’t have a successful blog if you aren’t consistent.

So…my job as an Aerobic Mom is to take this valuable lesson and apply it to our favorite topic: living a healthy and fulfilling life as a MOM! So are you ready for the analogy? Here we go!

Just like my blog will never be successful if I take off writing for a month, so will we never reach our health and fitness goals if we aren’t consistent with our healthy eating and active lifestyle!

Do any of these excuses sound familiar to you?

  • I’m too tired to work out
  • I’m on vacation–these calories don’t count!
  • I already showered–I can’t get sweaty now.
  • It’s just a few bites, and I don’t want to dirty a tupperware.
  • It’s too much hassle to change into my workout clothes.
  • I’m too busy taking care of my family to find time to exercise.
  • I always eat an entire batch of cookie dough on the weekend.  It’s tradition.
  • Exercising hasn’t made a difference in my appearance anyway!

When you commit to be CONSISTENTLY healthy you will find your way around any excuse you can think of.  When you commit to an ACTIVE life, you realize it doesn’t mean you have to full-on be at the gym and in a sports bra every day!  You can burn plenty of calories pushing that stroller up and down hills, playing soccer with your 4 year old, and picking up the pace down the Wal-mart aisles.  While I certainly would never deny that a formal, 30-45 minute cardio session is ideal, sometimes consistency calls for creativity.  It’s better to do less than your best, than do nothing at all.

You’ll also realize that calories never take a day off.  It doesn’t matter if it’s Saturday, Sunday, or Tuesday, eating 1000 extra calories of apple crisp after dinner is still 1000 extra calories, and your body will process it just the same.  What you eat is never a secret, it’s written in the way you fit into your jeans for all to see.

So…what say we make a commitment today?  I commit to be more consistent in my blogging, if you commit to being consistent in your active and healthy lifestyle.  Deal?  Just remember, sometimes it will be less than my best…but at least it will be there.

Deal! I’ve actually been waking up early (5 AM today) to get my exercise and meditation in before the kids wake up. It really makes such a huge difference in the day. I’m a much happier mom because I started the day with those things that are so essential to my health and happiness. I’m not perfect, it doesn’t happen everyday. But, I do my best.

Nisha–You rock! I really admire you 5 am moms. I am still dead to the world (although I’m usually feeding my four month old at 4 am)–ah, I know, excuses! You are awesome! Keep it up through the holidays–that’s the challenge!

Awesome post! I WILL try to do better at being consistent. Every morning this past week I’ve turned my alarm off, and didn’t go to the gym. I’m going to do better this next week. Thanks for the motivation!
